How to register website with search engines

#1
I've just finished a little website for my company and am trying to figure out how to register it so that it stands a chance in hell of being found by major search engines.

The company from which we bought the domain name/space says it registers the site, but it gives no details and doesn't mention specific search engines.

I keep finding scammy sites that say they'll register me with 8 gazillion search engines for only $500, blah dee blah blah blah.

Any suggestions?

(I've already done the good, tidy meta keywords stuff, but really want to register appropriately)

Thanks!

Hey,

The easiest thing to do is register with dmoz, at http://www.dmoz.com. They have a handy "suggest a url" button up top, tells you how to do it.

Dmoz filters down to google, yahoo, etc. It may take a while, though.

Good luck!

Fretty, that's what I do in real life.

If you want I'll take a look at the site. The real key is to get people to link to your site...the Open Directory is just one such place, though it's a good place to get into.

The "adwords" I don't particularly agree with. Depending on your industry your competition may just click on your website to piss you off.

Straight "submission" should be free...except for Yahoo and LookSmart. The "zillions" don't count, only the top 15 or so.

I'll talk later if you'd like.
