When I go to the therapist, I usually sit up. But I am tempted to lie down next time.... but I think that might be weird...

On the one hand, I mean, I hardly know this woman! (Although she knows WAY too much about me....)

On the other hand....I am paying her so much money!!! I should at least be comfortable!

Your response to my little poll and any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

When I gone to see a therapist in the past, I usually sit because if I did lie down, I would be way too comfortable and end up falling asleep on their couch. The only time I actually lied down on a couch was when a therapist tried to put me under hypnosis for this problem of mine. It just felt too weird lying on it, other than for hypnosis. I may not live in New York, so I hope you don't mind Mamacita, but I thought I may be of help to you anyway.

According to my ex-best-friend the psychoanalyst, the couch position is favored by the strict analytical folks for therapeutic reasons. Something about not confronting the therapist face to face, allowing the free association of thoughts and ideas, and allowing the shrink to work on the Times puzzle in peace.

For your garden variety therapists, the chair is usually fine.

I prefer the chair. For couples counseling, separate pieces of furniture are swell.

Thanks for the input folks!! I saw my shrink yesterday and instead lying down like a douche bag... I just sat at the far end of the couch... as far from her as possible... I thought that was a good way to incorporate GDW's comment about not confronting the therapist face to face, which is perhaps why I was having that impulse to lie down.

And no! I don't mind non-NYC commentary a bit! I just find Off-Topic a little mean sometimes... but perhaps that is just me...

Anyhoo... thanks for your feedback IRC! What a friggin' helpful bunch!

Hey Dr. Appel, What position do you prefer I be in??? I'm ready and waiting for you to come make a house call or I can just pop over a bit to your place. Just PM me your phone number.

Í'm thinking about getting a shrink, does it help?
Um, yeah. I think seeing a good shrink can help a lot. But I would get a referral from someone you trust... which can be difficult when you are trying to get someone who is covered by your insurance (depending on what kind you have).

I saw a not-so-good shrink for a little while... and I just felt like she thought I was crazy and she was judging me. And I became obsessed with her wig. It didn't work out.

I'll be your shrink. I'm hard up for cash and I love to listen.
Remarkably, New York State's requirements for licensing of "therapists" are surprisingly lax. (Not physicians or psychiatrists or social workers, just yucks who call themselves "therapists.") As in, practically nonexistent, last time I checked in.

Yep, you probably need more qualifications to cut hair or do nails.

Just get your hair done first by a licensed barber first so that it is not distracting.

You're welcome, Eric.

I read somewhere that Freud made his patients lie down on the couch simply because he got sick and tired of seeing all these faces.
