So my girlfriend’s birthday is coming up, and I want to buy her a necklace. She used to like a place on the Upper West Side called Liberty House, but I know that she just popped in there recently and wasn’t wowed. Does anyone have a good place to recommend? She likes sort of arty (maybe art-deco-y), small-ish kind of stuff. I don’t want to go too overboard, but would like to get her something nice.

Her birthday happens to fall on Thanksgiving weekend, so I’m thinking maybe something with a turkey design.

Hannah K on Court Street in Cobble Hill has nice arty stuff in the window, I don't know if it is super expensive but the stuff looks nice, although I've never been inside.

Try Alphabets (one in East Village, one in West) for cool pretty things.

Also, believe it or not, don't discount the majors. Try trolling the jewelry counter at Macy's. My husband was good at finding some neat deco-type silver/white gold pieces there, and the sales can be outstanding. Try Wednesdays paper for percent-off coupons. Also, you'd be surprised at the range of prices at Fortunoff's.

Uh, I'd think long and hard about the turkey thing, though. It's limited-wear.

I second the Clay Pot...in fact, 90% of my jewelry is from that store. They have fantastic stuff...really interesting, really different, and you can find stuff that isn't insanely expensive.

But, if you want to stay in Manhattan, I suggest you go to the Alexis Bittar store in Soho (they also sell his stuff at Saks). He crafts much of his stuff from lucite and semi-precious stones. go to www.alexisbittar.com for an idea of his stuff.

Thanks, everybody, for your suggestions.

And now I open it up to any other, more general advice you have for Men Buying Jewelry for Their Girlfriends.

Because I think that would be fun.

And because you all probably have something to get off your chests about necklaces. Get it? Off your chests?

I need a cup of coffee.
