Haircut

#1
So the new year is coming and I feel like doing something substantial to my head. Since I can't afford another tattoo, haircut seems like a good idea.

I used to go home to CT to get my hair cut, but since I live in NYC full time now I need to find a place. I don't want to pay any more than 75 bucks for a shampoo, cut, and blow dry. I'd pay $100 if I really had to, but I can't justify wasting that much on something so impermanent. And I don't just want to pick one out of the yellow pages.

Does anyone know a place?

You're still a student right? Take advantage and go down to Vidal Sassoon on 14th and 5th. I believe that on Mondays they offer student discounts; depending on the "level" of stylist they assign you, you can get an awesome wash/cut/dry for $70-75. . I did this throughout law school and got an incredible stylist (for whom I now pay full price at his own salon). I think they also offer cuts by students as part of their training program on another night (their students are well supervised) for a discount as well. I don't know what kind of hair you have, but I suffered from botched up cheap haircuts for years (thin, wavy, slow growing hair) and was happy to pay.

Call and check out these options and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Soon Beauty Lab on 11th st. btw 1st and 2nd. Very cute place with dogs running around, $50 and up cuts. They also have a place on I think 21st St.

Has anyone gone to the Aveeda school for a cut from one of the students? A friend of mine recommended it, apparently it's super cheap but I'd like to know if it will turn out nice.
I haven't had a haircut in over a year. Golly.

17th, just west of B'way/Union Square is the Carsten Institute. $15 for my girly guy hair. People are STILL going nuts!

1) How do I find out when training nights are at Aveda or Vidal Sassoon?

2) How long before, training night or no, do I need to make an appointment?

Thanks, ya guys, this has been very helpful!

I recommend "Beehive" in Williamsburg. Cuts are around $50 and they're great.
Beehive is the best. Ask for Nikki. She costs $55, and so does Louisa, but the other cutters are still at $45 I think.

i did a bumble and bumble training night a while ago....boo hiss. you have to go in for a consultation, which was fine. you wait in a long line, someone looks at your head and you make an appointment. when i came back in, they had put in me in the "short bob" group and were giving EVERYONE the same cut. when they told me this, i told them how ridiculous it was that 30 people are going to leave with the same haircut. i did not want a "short bob" and you know, i think most people dont. so they moved me to the other section and this idiot gave me a really bad haircut anyway. thumbs down for bumble and bumble.

i've been cutting my own hair ever since and am really starting to hate it. i think i'm ready to pay for something again. anyone have a really cool punky hair stylist in manhattan? i have a feeling the williamsburg one would be perfect, but i'm too lazy to travel for it...yet.

Money Where My Hair Is

I'm putting my money where my mouth is and am getting my haircut again at the place I recommend, "the Beehive" in Williamsburg, this Friday.

I've also heard horror stories about Bumble & Bumble.

With hair, I swear, you truly get what you pay for.

I had Sarah cut my hair and it turned out soooooooooo great. Best hair cut ever. She agreed that it would be hard for a student to cut my hair, as it can be very difficult to cut. But I'm very happy. And I feel floaty because I lost a good seven inches of hair. Hooray!

Bumble and Bumble does have three haircuts that they give everyone. Terrible. The aveda school actually does give whatever haircut you want. I think it costs $18 and it's really good! The woman that did my hair gives free haircuts at a salon that she is interning at or $20 for color. I don't have the info on hand but if you are interested you can PM me and I'll find it. I have been to the Beehive too, and love it, but it costs more than $18 or free.

I found a problem with a lot of the free "training sessions" was that I would have to get way downtown and be there at 7:30 am, which, for me, is a 1 and 1/2 hour commute, so I'd have to get up at 4:30 or something and I'm usually not in bed yet then. But, were I more energetic, or less of an insomniac, I'd have considered it. I suppose that in the end I didn't want to risk a botched haircut. I had 50 bucks to spare, and it was worth it. Plus, I didn't want to wait a week for an appointment. I have a short attention span.

Aveda doesn't have training sessions. You can just make an appointment. I think the only problem is there may be a wait, like 2-3 weeks until their next appt. The people who cut your hair are all almost done with their schooling, so I feel like it's not really risky in terms of getting a bad haircut. But I totally understand wanting to go to a salon. I am oddly unconcerned with bad haircuts, but I feel like it's hard to mess up my hair.
