Gyms

It has been a couple of years since I have belonged to a gym. I just started a class that is 2 nights a week for the next 9 months. It starts 2.5 hours after I get off of work and is close to work. So basically I will have to waste a bunch of time in midtown and figure I should probably join a gym.

If I join New York Health and Raquet club through work, I can use any of their clubs for $850 a year. It looks like their clubs are nice and they have a couple clubs near work and a club near home.

Is this a good deal? Does anybody know of a better deal out there? I want to be able to go near work (51st/6th) and home (Thompson/Prince).

I was a member of NYHRC at 45th and Lex. a few years back. It was small but very laid back and I paid about the same. Bonus: no gym bunnies! There is also a NY Sports Club and an Equinox on this block. They are nicer but more expensive. If you use any of them enough, it's worth the price.

The ones I would probably be going to would be on 50th between 5th and Mad, 56th, between 5th and 6th, and 13th and 5th.

The one on 56th looks HUGE - it says it is 7 floors.

Has anybody been to these locations and could tell me what they are like?

Ny sports clubs can't really beat $850, but there is one on practically every corner and they tend to be clean and huge. The one on 34th is smaller, but you can do yoga on the roof of the building, if you're into that sort of thing.

I echo the positive sentiment for NYSC. I've been a passport member for 4 years. The passport allows you to use all of their gyms in the city. If, for nothing else, they are everywhere; not only where you will be working out most frequently, but you have access to a bathroom and shower almost anywhere in the city. Granted, that may only be important to me because I'm in different parts of the city every day. And the group classes are free. I pay a little under $1,000 a year with a SAG discount. So I'm not sure if that $850 figure in the above post is for a passport membership.

But NYHR sounds like a good deal too if you have that discount through work. But you may switch jobs one day.

I sent in my thing for the NYHR through work. It is indeed a passport type membership, where I can go to any gym. It works out to just over $70 a month. They equivilant type membership at NYSC would be $120 per month.

Please, if there is a god, let me switch jobs one day!

I use Crunch and have to admit I am really happy with them
(my only complaint is they play a little bit too much techo music at times).
What I like is that they have lots of classes, the locations are good for me.
They have a 24 hour Crunch in the East Village, and the other one near me is open til 10
Oh, and it doesnt seem to be too crowded most of the time which was a real pain with my previous gyms.
and....Not for nothing, plenty of pretty girls, if you like that sort of thing.

When i joined it was $1200. for 2 years, for access to all the NYC Crunch's

So, its at least worth checking out, they used to give free one week memberships so you could try it out.
