I'm a terrible coach ...

... but for some reason I just keep winding up with students who go on to kick ass, such as STOCKHOLM SYNDROME, who did so Saturday night in an elegant longform way.

Over the last 10 years, I've taught dozens invited workshops at universities and improv festivals throughout the United States and Europe. I've studied and/or performed on teams at The Second City, ImprovOlympic, and The Annoyance in Chicago, and at the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York. See www.dangoldstein.com/non-academ.html for more detail.

I studied The Harold in Chicago under the people who taught the founders of the Upright Citizen's Brigade. For New York references talk to: Michael Delaney, Andrew Secunda, Kevin Mullaney, Billy Merritt, Julie Brister, Ali Faranakian, and Armando Diaz.

I have created several longforms such as SITCOM which has had 13 production runs in the US and Europe (including a UCB production starring Michael Delaney, Andrew Secunda, Jessica St. Clair, and Dannah Feinglass) and COMMEDIA DELL'HIGH SCHOOL, which has seen 5 productions, including last year's sold-out run at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater (starring John Gemberling, Curtis Gwinn, Tara Copeland, Jessica St. Clair, and Jason Mantzoukas). I'm a published comedy writer with several pieces in print in publications such as McSweeney's, and Modern Humorist.

From my day job of teaching psychology, I'm well versed in the art of bringing people up to their optimal level of performance, and showing the secrets of how simple it all really is.

i am still a terrible coach, and lately i have realized kind of a lousy person. however, due to some unexplained mystery, if you get coached by me, you and your group will become better. come see stockholm syndrome friday night if you want to see the kind of results i get.

Dear Coaching Diary,

I am coaching three teams now and teaching improv to professional students at NYU and Columbia. Other people should work with me too, as I will make them good at improv.

Love,
Dan

Dear Fates,

About my coach, Dan Goldstein...thanks. My team is awesome in no small part due to the direction of Dr. Goldstein. Fates, you are truly benevolent, wise and also the coolest for having the stars align is such as way that we get to work with the Dan Goldstein.

If only other people could somehow hire him and experience all of his knowledge and insight, but how?

Thanks again,

Madalyn

Dan knows math so let me put this into a probibility equation.

If Dan coaches you and your team, what is the probibility that you will a whole lot better?

Answer: 100%

If you want to check my math, just have the man coach you and you'll see it's a pretty simple equation:

Dan Golsdtein + you = awesome

Gunshow experienced a very positive rehearsal with Dan. We all walked away having done something new. The last half hour was like the end of a rigorous basketball practice when you're trying and trying but so fucking drained your feet are dragging, yet zen. Great workout.

We (Gun Show) had Dan as a coach last night and I have to say it was quite awesome. He obviously has a vast understanding and appreciation of improv and comes to rehearsal prepared to challenge and enlighten.
The rehearsal was loose and yet very structured and productive at the same time. He has a really positive approach, which was great to work with.
I feel like I could just go on and on, which I did last night after rehearsal. Anyway, Dan is great. If you have the opportunity to have him as a coach I would not pass it up.

This is not a well written opinion on Dan as a coach, but I promise that he is awesome!

Shamed by my poor writing skills,
Ashley

It looks like I'm Sam Riegel, but this is acutally Rob Blatt typing from Sam's computer. I'm in GunShow, along with Ashley and Ryan and I echo the positive things they had to say about Dan G's coaching skills. Filling in for a single session, he came prepared to challenge us with new warm ups and openings, and he had a point behind each of the exercises - it's always nice to know that a coach has a method to the madness that is Improv Coaching. And Dan followed up with us the very next day with notes and comments. Very helpful. Plus, he's from Maryland. What more could you want? Maryland, people!! Hire this guy.

Dr. Dan Goldstein is a great coach that gives you concrete techniques to improve your improv. He's about "do this." He's not about "don't do that."

Dan is also really good at seeing the big picture of a team. Even if you're a team that has coaches you already work with, I would recommend working with Dan for a few rehearsals. He can look at a team and seeing their strengths and weaknesses, nudge them in the direction towards which they're best suited.

Also, he's a Ph.d. He works in decision sciences (a branch of psychology) at Columbia University and uses his knowledge of psychology to help with improv. Intriguing, isn't he? Give him a whirl.

Oh, yeah, he's a damn weirdo too. (but in a good way)

Hi.

I'm currently directing four groups in New York.

People I have directed have gone on to IO teams, UCB teams, Second City ETC, Second City Mainstage, Boom Chicago, as well as the writing staffs of The Daily Show & Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

What I do: I work with your group to create a signature form. Your group performs the form. I've created five such forms which have been produced in dozens of runs internationally.

A man with a plan.

Dan is a man with a plan! You will do things you have never done before... in ways you would not have imagined possible. He brings new ideas and techniques to every practice.

A coach worth every friggin' cent and more....

Why not take a hit of Dan Goldstein?.... it will make you feel good.... :p
