Give me the scoop on Williamsburg and/or Greenpoint!

#1
So, I'm packing up and moving from my neighborhood in Brooklyn that no one has ever heard of (Ditmas Park, anyone?) and strongly considering a move to either Williamsburg or Greenpoint in the spring, May-ish or so.

Now, I've been to Williamsburg a couple times, but how is it to live there? I'm on the petite side, so I'm looking for something quite safe, obviously. What are areas of those two neighborhoods to shy away from at night or otherwise, and what areas are just fine? How are the trains? Any crappy realtors I should stay away from? That sort of stuff.

So, talk to me. Any heads up you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Williamsburg is awesome. I've lived on Bedford for the past two years - it's safe, there are hipsters on the streets around the clock - the L train is fine to take any time of night, and irony is a commodity there. I say as long as you're not worried about being cool, or easily intimidated by trust funds or aggressive fashion - it's well worth looking into. And from the Bedford stop it's ten minutes to 8th ave.

I just moved to the Greenpoint/Williamsburg (Meserole and Manhattan Ave) area and I love it. It's a good neighborhood and shopping area that has anything you'd ever need and it's close by.
Bedford area is cool because of the proximity to bars, venues, restaurants, performance spaces, and you usually don't have to deal with the L train when it runs in sections at nights (Lorimer and beyond).

Some parts of East Williamsburg (aka. Bushwick) you may want to shy away from except for anything immediately around the Morgan Ave. stop, that's a cool up and coming area.
At night you might want to avoid Bushwick Ave. at night unless you're a hooker or a pimp.

North of the Bedford Area (greenpoint) seems to be safe at night, the area is rather industrial still with metal shops random rock cutting facilities, there are lofts going in but the streets are quiet at night.

I don't know about shady realtors but there is http://www.apartmentsandlofts.com/ they seem ok maybe, I dunno, craigslist is still a good way to go.

Hellooo! I know you know I'm moving there too, so I just wanted to say stay away from KING DAVID REALTY. They are really rude people, and kinda awful to deal with so yeah.

And people who live there, I am looking to move near Bedford...tell me the good restaurants, coffee shops, late night diners, you know, the works! I'm probably moving fairly soon so I want to know the nice places!

Any stop past Grand Street is getting into potentially scary land. And you're NOT in Williamsburg any longer. You're in Bushwick. No matter what people say.

It's amazing just how large "East" Williamsburg is when you speak to real estate agents.

No matter how gentrified or trendy Williamsburg has become, it's still an amazing place to live.

It's safe, it's insanely convenient and there's a ton of stuff to do.

I like to call Williamsburg "The Low Self-Esteem Capital of the World."
Why? I find most people here to be pretty into themselves. MAYBE The Ego Capital of Brooklyn.

Beep bop beep ... williamsburg + sad = funny .... beeep beep boop. robot is sad and lonely ... what is emotion ... beep bop ..funny. Laughs are inversely proportional to crowds from Williamsburg. arctan(heightening) + sin(wacky) = comedy platinum...

Geek:
If you use a realtor, you will get ripped of, IMO.
Back when I first moved to East Williamsburg/North Bushwick/whatever area, I managed to find a good place by wandering around and talking to various "old timers." One dude told me about his sister-in-law (who didn't advertise) and I found my place. (I'll admit that my being a Brooklyn native probably helped--along with a hatred of Walter J. O'Malley, the man who burns in hell for moving the Dodgers to L.A.) If you stay in the Bedford Ave. area, you'll pay too much.

And yes, the "L" train is an unreliable nightmare. But I do manage to get a lot of reading done...

Good luck!
