um...Chloe Sevigny lives in my building. Her boyfriend (I think he's in the band A.R.E Weapons) looks really scary, but is very nice to the doormen.

i was in dempsey's the other day, and that guy who knows him came in. so i chatted him up a little bit. apparently, they haven't spent so much time in the new apt. just came by once to drop off wedding presents.

apparently, elvis(not surprising) is a little reclusive and doesn't have many friends in town. they were at some dinner party and this dude says it was very small his big friends are this dude's friend roy, and get this, steve buscemi.

this dempsey's dude is a playwright/short stories writer. apparently, marc ribot lives a block away from dempsey's too. i like his guitar playing---he's a big session player. and he played on mighty like a rose, spike, and kojak variety.

supposedly, he's going to to try and drag elvis to dempsey's. also, he's bringing in this song that he wrote that elvis recorded for him. can't wait to hear it.

new goal for 2005: bring elvis to harold night!

Julie, next time you see him can you ask him to explain this lyric (from Whisper to a Scream on Trust):
"But the 1 over the 8 seems less like 1 and more like 4"

Then give him a big ol' kiss!
And ask him to host an Elvis Costello sing-along! (My friend Lucinda and I used to have them regularly but now we live in different states.)

I always took it to mean that it was a music reference. I don't know much about music, but I THINK it means that everything is faster (instead of being 1 note every 8 beats, it's 4 notes every 8 or 1 every 2 beats). Which would make sense as the song's title refers to a build in intensity.

But check with Declan.

He probably has a firmer grip on the lyrics' meaning.

That's smart! Any idea of what the "3 French letters" are from "Man out of Time"?
Brian, please remind him to call everyone on this thread :) We love him. Then give him a big ol' kiss.

Just goes to show you how life can change. One day Elvis Costello's not living anywhere near you, and the next day he's living in your neighborhood, in a pal's building!!!!!!!! It's almost too exciting!

"French letter" = condom. Sold in packets of three in the UK.

Thanks for the tip, Brian! Next time an invitation, OK, pal? After all, I would have saved your life in 'Nam had we been in 'Nam at the same time, in close proximity, and had your life been in danger, and had I not chickened out and run away.

RE: "But the 1 over the 8 seems less like 1 and more like 4"

Apparently 'one over the eight' is an old British term for getting
drunk (eight pints = 1 gallon). I guess he's feeling like he has had four beers when he's only actually had one?

When I figured out what this meant as a freshman in college, I attempted to use the term casually in conversation. In Delaware. My "desperately wanting to be British" period ranks in up there as far as my "most embarassing periods" go.

I'm almost as excited about him living nearby as I am by Elvis Costello. He also played on Tom Waits' Rain Dogs, one of my favorite albums. I love his ultra-percussive style. If I remember right, he and Syd Straw recorded a very pretty version of the Rutles' "I Must Be In Love."

Someone please tell Elvis Costello that my Canadian friend Bill and I, when we get drunk, end up singing "Beyond Belief" every single time. And apologize to him for Dyna's punching him for "All This Useless Beauty." I love that song! And then punch him again for The Juliet Letters.

He already did. "Beaten To The Punch" off Get Happy!! The guy was prescient.

Don't be fooled by "The Sweetest Punch." That's about me punching someone else. There's a whole concept album in the works. I'm one of those quiet people who can go off at any time. And Elvis knows it. Even though we've never met. He gets me, man.

actually a 1/8 time signature would be faster than a 4/8 time signature. the bottom number is the type of note that gets the beat (the 1/8 note) and the top is the number of beats per measure.

1/8 would be 1 beat per measure 1/8 note gets the beat. 4/8, 4 beats per measure 1/8 note gets the beat. so a 4/8 would be 4 times longer than a 1/8.

This beats the time I waited on Elvis and then-wife Cait at Carmine's in 1997. Julie, do NOT punch him in the face for either of the above albums. Punch him in the face for marrying Diana Krall!
