DSI's Theater Space | NC Build-out

DEAR IRC COMMUNITY,

Thanks to everyone for supporting the DSI Theater and the NC improv community with its quest for dedicated space. The past few months have been busy for DSI. After the lower level space on Franklin St was closed -- the NC Dept of Insurance could not approve the space for Assembly Occupancy because of sprinkler issues -- DSI worked hard to identify an alternate space. We found an AWESOME home in Carrboro, less than 2 miles away, 1400sqft with 15' ceilings, able to fit 96 audience seats. DSI signed a lease thru December 2008 and the build-out began on Monday. We are planning our Grand Opening Weekend for October 7th & 8th, 2005.

For those of you who can't be here to see the transformation, here are some pre-construction photos.

The loading dock and entrance to the theater.

This view is from the emergency exit facing back towards the entrance. To the right are a pair of bathrooms and the future office/greenroom. To the right of the door will be a counter for ticket sales and concessions.

Turning left from the above view, and standing in front of the bathrooms, is this view. Zach and the contractor are standing in the area where the elevated tech booth will be. The stage will be located at the back of the space in the center side of the photo.

updates coming soon...

Thanks,

Zach Ward - Executive Producer
Ross White - Artistic Director
(and the entire DSI Community)

Updated photos of the transformation.

Towards the stage, tech booth visible on right.

Turning to the right, the entire counter and entrance are visible.

Turn to the right again and the walls are up for the office on the left and the two bathrooms on the right.

The stage has been built and a lot of color has been added. The front counter has been moved away from the front door temporarily for painting and construction purposes. So much work happening. It was great to see everyone in Toronto this weekend. I came home and had back-to-back meetings on Monday morning with the internet provider, a point-of-sale system rep, and the contractor. Electrical and paint will be finished this week. Carpet goes in next Monday. Final inspection by Thursday September 1st.

Congratulations! Looks like you've got a real home there.
Hope you're still gonna come to Kings on occasion.
We may see ourselves out there once or twice during the year, but YOU should check out what's happening in Chapel Hill and Carrboro in the meantime.

Thanks to Ryan Stone for posting that article on another thread. That reporter from Greensboro, NC contacted DSI because of things she heard were happening in Chapel Hill (50 miles away). I spent an hour on the phone and it looks like time well spent.

As for the DSI theater space, we'll have updated pictures by the end of the Labor Day Weekend, but we have officially passed inspection as of 9:45AM this morning. Thank you Town Building Inspector and Fire Marshall. We have tentatively been approved for 80-90 seats and will receive a final certificate of occupancy when they approve layout - aisle width, etc. This will happen as soon as our chairs* arrive. But the DSI Comedy Theater has been finished, the lights are up, everything is painted, we've passed inspection and we can start moving in... THIS WEEKEND.

www.churchchairs.com - they mean business and have been calling our comedy shows, "services" read: the chairs will arrive in plenty of time for your "services" on the 7th.

I am incredibly excited.

As you can see, there are only a few things left to do. The stage itself will be carpeted for acoustic reasons but that may not happen until after the grand opening on October 7th. Of course we need chairs; They are ordered and en route. The permanent lights will be replaced by lights that will be on a cord 6 ft. from the ceiling, making the ductwork etc, disappear.

The pictures don't begin to convey what it is like to be there in person. It's gorgeous. I'm going to spend the next month freaking out and bouncing off the walls waiting for the grand opening. It feels the same way the wait for Christmas did when I was a kid.

DSI received its Certificate of Occupancy this afternoon and we have seating capacity of 84 audience. DSI Comedy Theater opens Friday, October 7th (less than two weeks away).

DSI would like to report its first break-in. May there be no callbacks. Two weeks before the DSI Comedy Theater was set to open its doors, Officer Champion from the Carrboro Police Department called owner Zach Ward to the scene of a ridiculous crime. A cinder block had been tossed through the glass door of the business, leaving a glass trail. The super-villain came in and slammed an unlocked cash register onto the ground, destroying it to retrieve its contents: a goldmine of $17. The theater hadn't even opened yet, and word to the street, no cash will be kept on the premises when we do open. However, it was not just the $17 in cash that was taken; no, no, no. A Comedy Theater super-villain would not be complete unless they left with 3 single packs of starburst and two fresh cans of AXE body spray. AXE body spray, yeah that's right, AXE body spray!!! Dear reader of this "breaking" news, if you spot someone walking the streets of North Carolina with less than $17, pockets overflowing with leftover lemon starburst, smelling like Tsunami or VooDoo, you may have our ridiculous super-villain.
