Drivers License Renewal?

#1
My license is expired, and I was going to go to the DMV on my lunch break and get a new one...but some of the information online mentions a $50 fee for license renewal. I've renewed my license in Michigan before without a fee, is it true I have to pay to renew in New York?

Sheesh. I can understand paying some sort of fee, but $50 is kind of ridiculous. I think I'll wait on renewing it. Thanks for the info.

watch out -- if it's expired by more than a year (I think), you'll have to take a test to get a new one. Or is that only for out-of-state licenses?

From what is listed on the website, I have two years after it expires to renew it without having to go through the whole rigamarole. Mine just expired in January, so I've got plenty of time.

Be warned: You can't fly on a plane with an expired license. I learned that shit the hard way. Actually, sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. If you do you have to have your birth certificate and stuff with you.

A few years ago I was denied entry to a bar because my license was expired. It was downtown, and my license had only expired the week before.

Me (outside bar): You're not letting me in? It just means I can't drive. My age is still the same.

Doorman: Too bad.

So...there's that, too.

I've lived here almost 7 years and still have my SC driver's license. It expires in December. I was planning on getting a proper NY license finally when it expires. I'll have to pay $50 to get one? Maybe I'll just renew the SC one when I'm home for Christmas. Can anyone tell me any reason why I need to have a NY license? (Other than the fact that cops are more suspicious of a SC license when you get busted for staging a U2 concert on your roof.)

Here's what it says about your situation:

To exchange an acceptable out-of-state photo driver license for a NYS driver license:

-Complete application form MV-44 and apply at a local DMV office.
-Pass a vision test at the DMV office, or bring a valid form MV-619 (Eye Test Report) completed by an eye-care professional. If the form MV-619 has a print date of 9/03 or earlier, the form is valid for 6 months after the date of the eye test. If the form has a print date of 3/04 or later, the eye-care professional marks a box on the form to indicate if the form is valid for 6 months or for 12 months after the date of the eye test.
-Surrender your out-of-state driver license. See the information below if your out-of-state driver license is lost or stolen.
-Provide at least two points of identification and proof of date of birth, and your out-of-state photo driver license and your Social Security Card.
-Show your Social Security Card. If you are not eligible for a Social Security Card, you must provide a letter from the US Social Security Administration (SSA) that states that you are not eligible. The SSA Letter must have been issued within the last 30 days. You must also show an I-94 with one of the following codes: B-1, B-2, E-2, F-2, H4, L-2, M-2, O-3, P-4, Q-3, R-2 or TD. At least 11 months of valid, legal status must remain on your I-94.
-Pay the $10 application fee and the driver license fee with cash, check, money order or credit card.

If you live in NY, get a NY drivers license.

I had my old Illinois drivers license for a while and then after sept 11th I had to carry around my license and utility bills with my name and adress on them to get through police lines to get home for a week or so. The whole time I was crazy paranoid that they would tighten the ID restrictions while I was at work and I would not be able to get home.

Get your NY license.
