If you are in bed with the flu and someone stands at your doorway and says I've got £50 (sorry $) here for you if you walk over to get it and you can't. It's the flu. If you can, it's a cold.

Most people with 'the flu', really have a severe cold. I've had some killer colds, never the flu.

i think i've only had it once, and it was pretty terrible. during finals season, right before i was supposed to go abroad. i ended up getting even sicker about a month later from something different (although possibly tangentially related) and i never got to go to st andrews :(

I was bedridden for a weekend about a month and a half ago. My worry now is that whatever I had is going to mutate and make its way back to me so I get the same thing twice in the same winter.

Stupid antibodies.

I was under the impression that any symptoms other than coughing, sneezing, and sore throat mean you have a flu. Sore muscles - flu. Tired - flu. Queesy - flu.

The difference between a cold and the flu is the virus (or viruses) that causes each. Influenza takes longer to work through your system and is more severe but a cold can have any of those symptoms you mentioned as well.

Edit: I say that with great authority, but, um, I don't know anything more than anybody else. This is just what I thought.

My baby had a fever two nights ago, after we visited my sister-in-law, and her three kids, and their myriad of illnesses.

Constant crying from 1am to 7am. Good times!

Many people with a cold actually have allergy symptoms. Check the color of the goo coming out of your nose. Clear=allergies. Technicolor=infection.

I don't have the flu, but I keep hearing about it from all around. I was listening to a local health care person of some capacity or another on TV the other day, and she said "Every year, we try to predict which strain of the flu virus to innoculate against, but it's a crap shoot, really." That cracked me up, but then it made me feel less secure about having gotten the shot. I'm considering hermitage until spring.

Since the flu and colds are viral, aren't antibiotics useless against them?

From Wikipedia: "Since influenza is caused by a virus, antibiotics have no effect on the infection; unless prescribed for secondary infections such as bacterial pneumonia, they may lead to resistant bacteria. Antiviral medication is sometimes effective, but viruses can develop resistance to the standard antiviral drugs."

Way to spoil the placebo effect. Now she'll have to try homeopathy.

Perhaps a little WebMD will make you feel better?

"Don't antibiotics cure everything?
Antibiotics are powerful medicines, but they cannot cure everything. Antibiotics do not work against illnesses that are caused by a virus. They do not help illnesses such as:

-Common colds.
-Influenza (flu).
-Most cases of acute bronchitis.
-Most sore throats not caused by strep.
-Runny noses."

Feel better, sicko!

I had a fucking badass cold recently. The cough from it lasted for three months. It was horrible and not as sexy as one might think.

I've been sick on and off for three weeks now with what I thought was a cold. I tend to think i'm really hardcore and never bother to see a doctor until i think i'm about to die. So after a week of waking up everyday with vicious headaches- i went to see the doctor yesterday and it turns out i have the most heinous sinus infection ever. literally half my face is swollen and numb- almost bells palsy style. The 'Maxillary Sinusitis' also adds pressure to the jaw and upper back teeth so i called my dentist thinking i would have to line up another root canal. With the antibiotics the tooth/jaw pain went away. I am slowly regaining feeling in my face now.

If you are like me- don't have insurance and rather self medicate... don't be an ass. Go see the motherfucking doctor before you turn into Quasimoto. This shit is hellacious.

I know that other people have said this a couple times before, but it's also important to get a blood test to make sure that you don't have something more serious that shares similar symptoms with the flu.

It could be something you wouldn't even think of.

During his highschool years, my brother fell while playing lazer tag and bruised his lower back. A few days later, he came down with a bad "flu." He was ache-y, had a high fever and an upset stomach. His fever spiked one night to 104, so my mother brought him to the hospital. It turned out he had a sist in his back that ruptured and became infected. He had to undergo some disgusting and painful procedures to aleviate the infection.

Anyway, point is, if you have a fever that persists for more than a day or two without any improvement, you should go to the doctor.
