Women’s Longform Class

This class is designed to guide and encourage players to overcome limitations they have run into in their lives or performances, and to work outside of gender based stereotypes. Within a supportive atmosphere using physical warm-ups, YesAnding exercises, layering techniques, monologues and longform improv formats, players learn to access unlimited imaginations and to create surprising new characters, becoming increasingly in tune with their own creative centers. The first half hour of the class will begin with open theory discussions, covering topics such as battling the inner critic, fear of success, authenticity, heightening and extending within improv work, being present on stage and YesAnding. The remainder of the class time will be spent in scenework, monologues and longforms led by the instructor.

Karen Herr is a founding member of The White Horse Experiment and Naked Apartment, Karen has also peformed with The Chainsaw Boys, appearing in improv festivals both locally and nationally. She has been performing longform and short form improvisation in New York for the last six years, and has studied with Burn Manhattan, the Upright Citizen's Brigade, Shira Piven and briefly with the legendary Del Close of Chicago. Karen was also with improvisation theatre group, Mobius, performing plays going from the end back to the beginning, and coming around to the end again, the excitement of which inspired both Karen and her fellow performer Suz Powell, to form the all-woman group, goga. Karen also writes sketch comedy and has made several short films which she co-wrote with her friend and writing partner, New York improvisor Nadine Miller.
