Dark Champions Return to UCBT

#1
At 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays June 7th and 14th, Dark Champions will perform at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre.

Twenty years later, noted rock scribe Christian Hoard will compile the first comprehensive account of the days leading up to, during, and after these shows.

The following will be an excerpt from his bestseller, Little Jimmy's Losing Blood: An Oral Fortnight with Dark Champions (© 2023, Penguin Putnam):

The UCB Theatre moved to 26th Street in April 2003. Those spring months found DC prospering: Dillinger was fast becoming a theatre favorite, Alan Corey had been cast in The Restaurant -- the original, pre FDA-regulated version -- and John Reynolds was enjoying the one-year anniversary of his first marriage.

The chance to return to the UCBT, however, was the prize upon which their eyes had been kept. And they won it: two Saturdays, 7:30 p.m., with Guile.

The Champs were, as Eric Scott would later title his Obie-winning one-man show, on a gravy train to serendipity junction.

Chris Kula, castmember: In spring’ 03 I was living in a shitty hole of an apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. When I got the call from Owen (Burke, former artistic director of the UCBT, current State Rep. from Connecticut) confirming those UCB shows, a part of me was like, “Thank God, now I can finally afford to firebomb this place and move out,” while another part of me was like, “Wait, you’re aware we’re not getting paid for these shows, right?” and the first part was all like, “Oh. Damn.”

It was a blessing in disguise, though, as it turned out the first part of me was a demon. I ended up getting it exorcised.

Angie George, castmember: “We wanted to set a new standard for the groups out there. Drugs? Taken. Laws? Broken. Chicks? Taken and broken. We were rebels but we had a cause and that cause was rock.”

Of course, you'll recognize that as the “Horses Won't Deny Me” monologue from the waterfall scene in “To Live Crue: The Story of Nikki Sixx,” which I wrote much later on, yet always felt had been inspired more by Dark Champions than Motley Crue.

Noted rock scribe Christian Hoard writes of Dark Champions’ famed “Paul Bunyan” flyer (page 98):

“It was crude. Folksy. Amateurish. Endearing. Left of center. Even lefter. Further still. There it is. Humorous – or, humored? Rustic. Craft-y. No less folksy. Invoking The Band by the band The Band. Proudly humble. A flyer, oh yes, a flyer... but folksy.”

This Saturday, see the Dark Champions perform their new show: "We Have Two Shows at the UCB".

I'll be there, will you?

Kula: The support we got for that first Saturday show was great. Lots of familiar faces in the audience: Berrebbi, Nate Shelkey, Chris Gethard, future Moon Base commander Zach Woods, Dan Winckler, Matt Shafeek. I believe there were also some women.

George: Guile was a great opener, like Ratt for the Crüe on the Shout at the Devil Tour in ’84.

Sarah Burns, castmember: DARK CHAMPIONS. June 14TH, 2003. 7:30 p.m. With Guile.

Favorite moments from this show:

John Reynolds generously endowing his scene partners with the names "Sweet Ass" and "Numbnuts".

Sar'a's jazz-handy-slow-wave gesture symbolizing 'funny business.'

Noted rock scribe Christian Hoard writes, "By mid-June '03, Dark Champions had distilled the popular warmup game 'Hotspot' to 'Southern Rock Hotspot,' later refining it to 'Early Doobie Brothers Hotspot' and finally to 'First Verse of The Doobie Brothers' China Grove Hotspot.'"

Come celebrate Sarah Burns' birthday with us on Saturday night at 7:30.

If it's anything like last years "Burns Birthday" show, it is something that is not to be missed!
