Dance Classes

#1
Does anyone have any advice for someone attempting to take dance classes for the first since age 7? I'm not taking it to hone my club technique, just need some sort of activity since the gym bores the pores into my face.

What do I wear?

Which types (ballet, modern, hip hop) is best for some one with a moderate sense of rhythm and a minimal sense of grace?

Which studio is your favorite?

Unspoken class rules and protocol?

Speak to me.

Hey Gktkd,

I really want to do this too. I have heard whisper of a Broadway dance class - like dancing you would see in musical theatre. So, you do the original choreography from Broadway musicals and they pick who plays what parts and stuff. I think this sounds so freaking fun and I want to go, but I don't want to go alone - actually I would go alone, but I know I won't go if I don't set it up with someone else. I think that the "Theatre" section listed on Broadway dance centers page would be what we are looking for, but I will consult my friend about where she takes (last week she learned some "Hello Dolly" stuff and she played Carol Channing - that won't bore you!). Anybody down?

I'm in! Especially if I can be Maria from Chorus Line, oh to fulfill my chubby Puerto Rican Dreams.

Right now I'm looking at hip hop classes but a little musical folly added in is always splendiforous.

EDIT: I'm going to Basic Pure Funk at Broadway Dance Center at 6pm and then from there hitting the Harold Night.

PM me if you want to get down. And by get down I mean, fall on your tushy laughing at how ridiculous we look.

Anything for a good laugh, baby!

I've never liked Broadway Dance...too snooty.

I recommend Dance Space Center on Broadway, near Canal. Their classes are fantastic. Especially their hip-hop classes...Jonathan Lee and Prince (who teach the classes) are amazing.

The Broadway Dancer center people weren't that bad. I took Basic Funk with Bev and am so sore today, stairs make me weep. The one handed push-ups she made us do were...well you can wager how they were.

Bev is brutal but super fun, ragging on people who were just going through the motions. We also did our combination to a house mix of "Toxic", which is one of my favorite bounce around to the beat in my private little car.

If I can walk again by next week, I'm going back. Thanks for all your tips.
