fuck yeah to all this ken beck love.
i still think of this move he did in the guthrie set at nccaf all the time. it's weird, i never remember shows or moves, but this pops up at least once a week. he was in a scene talking to his wife when a witch swoops in and abducts her and he, like a good teammate, let the dissolve happen and sorta melted back, but instead of cutting out of it, he kept it split screen. he let the scene play out, but continued to act distraught and then very quietly walked off the stage and started walking around the perimeter of the space, searching, not saying anything. a couple light chuckles through the room, but also a lot of people paying attention to the main thing on stage. after like a full minute or two he goes "WHERE'S MY WIFE" and the audience loses it. he circles the entire room, which is like a high school gymnasium or something, getting more emotional and then ends up on the other side of the stage, rejoins the scene, and confronts the witch. i think that same festival in another show he did an incredible job supplementing a high school scene by doing a walk-on as a dude just struggling with opening his locker. it didn't distract from the scene and it was the funniest thing. simple, assured, incredibly fun to watch.
he's helped my team krull in our eternal quest for a groove, too, jumping on board with the group sensibility and finding brilliant ways to activate it and help it grow into a voice. i can honestly say that we're all feeling a palpable improvement in our play that is directly linked to ken's insight and support. what a gung ho, generous and excellent coach. i love ken beck!
