Fubar, the bar that was "completely pulverized" according to the NY1 article, was a huge hangout during my time at The Neighborhood Playhouse (The Playhouse is on 54th and 1st). I ran a small theatre company with some other Playhouse grads, and Fubar always let us hold fundraisers there. My heart goes out.
