Hi, I'm in an Improv Troupe called Happy GAS that will be performing at the Dirty South Improv Festival. I've been reading a lot on this website and realized that NC has a pretty strong Improv base. I was wondering if any one could give me any information to further prepare myself for this trip. Maybe some shows that would be going up the same weekend that my troupe could attend, outside of the festival. Or in the festival for that matter.

Welcome to the NC board! I don't know what kinds of stuff you're looking for as far as DSIF. As far as I know a lot of the DSIF weekend is full of DSIF stuff. DSI won't be having regular Inside Improv at the ice cream shop and you'd have to travel a bit to get to Raleigh to see Comedyworx shows (Friday and Saturday). As far as a base of other information, I see NC improv growing by leaps and bounds, mostly through the actions of very dedicated and intelligent (and eager!) people. Nothing but positive energy working towards a positive goal.

I sound like a brochure, don't I?

Is anyone else going to be performing?

Thanks for the tips on NC. We at Happy GAS are getting incredibly excited. This will be pretty much everybody's first Fest in our group. I'm getting pumped because not only are we slated to perform Saturday Night, but I got into two workshops: Atacking and Engaging Scenes with Dan Izzo, and Enviromentalism with Ross White. The one thing I love about Improv is the learning involved. I really can't wait.

I was wondering if anyone on this particular board is going to be performing Friday or Saturday. I think I'll just learn huge amounts from watching other people perform as well as what I learn in the workshops. Are there any groups I should keep an eye out for in particular?

Do not miss Tony's Pony because we're a kickass houseteam.
Do not miss CHiPs because we're hosting the event and we're a kickass college team.
Do not miss Choke Up because they'll make you (choke up).
Do not miss WIT because they have a lot of (w)it.
Do not miss Mr. Diplomat because they are the other, pretty cool houseteam.
Do not miss the BAT because it's just the most effin awesome thing.

I'm so glad to see a lot of support for one another. A few of us were afraid that we'd get there, and being from a relatively "dry" improv climate, we'd be looked down on. You know how it is, those cocky improvisers with their dry wit and obscure Thundercat references. Jeezus, I've probably damned us to do a long form set about Mum-Ra.

Anyway, I think that support in improv is just awesome, and now I'm even more stoked about coming to this thing. Improv is slowly becoming my life and this is just another step. I hope to run into some of you IRC folks there, I'd love to talk shop with other people outside my group to get more insights.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I leave work @ 4:30 to drive to NC with my gang of McKellog Reporters ...

I can't wait to meet all the people on this board. So, look for the short chick from McKellog Report and introduce yourself with your name and your IRC name. Just do it! please

Also, I'll be The Armando workshop with Mr. Zach Ward and Musical Comedy with McCullough ... who I'm sure has a first name.

Excited? Oh, Yeah, baby.

Well then, since you asked, here are my Driving From New York To North Carolina Tips:

Everyone knows how to drive the Turnpike, so we can skip that. I-495 through Delaware is usually pretty easy, but slow down between Baltimore and Washington. Slow way the fuck down through Virginia.

When you hit Richmond, you'll see a split off for I-295 that looks like it will be longer than staying on I-95. It's a lie -- take I-295, it's practically the same length, and the speed limit is 10mph faster. At the end of I-295, though, you'll need to get onto I-95 North to hit the intersection with I-85, but that's just another four miles or so, still no big deal. Whatever you do, don't get back on I-95 South, 'cause then you'll have to go through Raleigh to get to Chapel Hill, and that's a bitch, and you'll have to pass through Emporia, VA, the speed trap capital of the free world.

On I-85 South through southern Virginia, don't go nuts, 'cause you're still in Virginia, but it's way better than I-95. Slow down around exit 12 especially, I've seen a lot more patrols in the South Hill area recently.

Once you hit North Carolina, seriously, it's smooth freakin' sailin'. I've driven that stretch of I-85 more times that I care to count over the past year, and I've seen a grand total of two troopers. The right lane will be doing 65-70mph, and the left lane will be doing minimum 85, maybe 90 or better. G'04 it.

Once you hit Durham, you're going to hit some crazy ass construction on I-85. Don't be confused by other exits for US 15, the exit you're looking for is for US 15-501 South, and it's a left exit at the end of all the crazy ass construction, exit 174B, I think. It'll remain a superhighway looking stretch for a few miles, then it'll dump out at exit 105A, I'm pretty sure, whichever exit is on the right. Then you'll still be on US 15-501 South, but now there will be businesses and junk. Whatever directions you have from there should be good, the main roads in Chapel Hill are pretty easy to follow.

Don't speed in Chapel Hill.

Good luck, and happy driving!

Heed this warning. This warning which Scott failed to give me when we were coming back from NY in December, which resulted in my being pulled over in Emporia, 4 miles from the North Carolina border. Virginia shows NO LOVE for those that are evil enough to violate its speeding laws.
