Comic book store on 14th and 7th...

Walking down 14th the other day, noticed Time Machine for the first time.
I always hear people talking about Midtown Comics.
Well how come you nerds never talk about this other place?

My guess: peeps don't know about it.

I've only been in there a few times. Knowledgeable staff (I think the guy who owns/runs it is named Roger).... mostly boxes of old comics, very few graphic novels and the like.

If you had asked, Time Machine is the first place I would have directed you. The best back issue selection in the city with prices that are a steal, and a very friendly, knowledgable staff (yes, his name's Roger). You get a good discount on weekly books if you set up a list with them (20% I think), back issues are priced more by quantity than anything else, and the staff's awesome.

I do my weekly shopping at Time Machine but go to Midtown for anything I might have missed.

Jed is a long time supporter of Time Machine, I think he has plugged them in his journal, and has gotten a lot of IRC people to visit it. I once ran into him and Deathron5000 at a sale there.

I once went there after taping an episode of my old public access cable show with one of my castmates. I went to look at comics he went to look at Playboys that he had taken the pictures for. That also summed up our interactions on stage.

I work at Forbidden Planet (13th and Broadway). We're constantly sold out of stuff, but if I'm there I can hook up any IRCers. I'm Taylor. I've got a beard and I'm usually around during the day except for Sundays and Mondays. Just ask for me.

Go anywhere except Midtown Comics, if you go there, you're buying comics from suits!

If you PM me, I'll let you know me schedule and I can put stuff on hold for you.

I enjoy Roger's when I get to go. I'm a big fan of sorting through semi-alphabetized boxes of $0.25-$0.50 comics. I think Ethan had to talk me out of buying the entire run of Power Pack (I might be exaggerating).

Before I started working for Wizard I used to go to Midtown on my lunch breaks every Wednesday. Now I work upstate and, um, just read the ones we get at work. Midtown annoys me because it is so crowded, the new releases are in a completely incomprehensible order, and the staff can be kinda mean. One told me he was wary of my company and then gave me the eye. Seriously, I work for WIZARD, you are BEHIND THE CASH REGISTER. Anyway...I'm big into back issues, so that's why I go to Midtown when I do and not Forbidden Planet. Not that Midtown has much of anything I need. Anyone have the last 6 issues of Planetary?

I like trades. I don't like back issues.
So I go to Midtown - but I also hate the crowds. If Grand Central wasn't such a bitch (again due to crowds) I'd go to the East Side Midtown.

Jed took me to Time Machine when I was visiting over there. The guy did me huge favour that allowed me to a buy a lot more than I was planning. Trouble was, any money I saved because of his discounts got swallowed up (and then some) by my excess baggage fees on the way home.

I don't mind Midtown (haven't been to the Grand Central store though), and I enjoy Forbidden Comics (though when it's crowded it's annoying and it tempts me to buy random stupid things to send to a friend of mine who is more into comics than I). Then again I don't really go pick up comics that much, I have a hankering to pick up the trades for Civil War cause it interests me.

Though to be honest I like St Mark's Comics as they seem genuinely amused when I buy a volume of Blue Monday.

OH PLEASE help me have Punisher MAX Vol. 10: Valley Forge! - you are the comic book store near my work and yes you always sell out.

Also Forbidden Planet needs a discount system thingy, it's not just midtown that does it- also good stores like the mom and pop on 23rd/5th Ave. They give you rewards! It's nice.

I've found St. Marks to be overpriced for books that probably have very little interest. ($5 for a random Books of Magic issue? Really? $2.50 over book? Was there such a run on them that you need to make the prices prohibitive?) Plus they have the annoying habit of selling copies that are beat to all hell for cover. Thanks, but no thanks, I'll get my Freak Brothers on elsewhere.

I work a block away from jim Hanley's and I virtually never go in. The organization is for shit (you'd think alphabetical, but it's arranged by title or author or character. Superman's together, all Garth Ennis books are together, etc), there are no discounts for casual browsers, and the sale trades are weaved in with the rest of the stock so you have to search the entire store for everything that's marked down. Still, I have purchased a few action figures there, since they're good about marking them down.

on behalf of a mom and pop shop, lemme just throw this out there......
if anyone wants any books or trades and doesn't want to make a trip anywhere except for their mailbox, I'd be happy to mail you any book, I'll eat postage for any IRC'ers.

We have a generous discount policy for reservists. Of course, if we don't have it, I can order if for you too. pm me or catch me at sales at falloutsheltercomics com
