Comedic Songwriting, Instructor: Shayna Ferm
Get inspired to drop your first comedy-rock album in this 6-week class that teaches you how to structure and perform music as a form of stand-up. No matter what instrument you play (castanets welcome), we explore song subjects, what makes a song funny, how to introduce and transition your music in a stand-up environment, how to create your music-comedy persona, and the music-comedy industry. Plan on leaving class with 2 songs ready to go. A keyboard/piano and guitar will be provided, but feel free to bring any instrument you like.

SHAYNA FERM has been performing as an actress, sketch comedian, stand-up and musician in NYC since 2000. A graduate from The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, she has worked at theaters all over the country, namely The Goodman Theatre, Shattered Globe, Manhattan Theatre Club, Women's Project, and Laguna Playhouse. As a comedian, she has performed solo and with her band, Shayna Ferm and the Upper Deckers, at venues such as Mercury Lounge, Comix (where she produced and hosted Comix Rocks), The PIT, Gotham Comedy Club, Upright Citizens Brigade and Joe's Pub among many others. Her debut album, Blonde, was released in 2008 by Chubby Records and sh9 was nominated for an ECNY award for Best Music Comedy Act 2009 and 2010. She is also a co-founder, writer, producer and performer in the acclaimed sketch group, FEARSOME, which has been performing since 2002 and most recently produced the musical "Grease 3: Threase," which Shayna co-wrote. Shayna is also one of the producers of SketchfestNYC, an annual NYC sketch comedy festival. Film and TV credits include: CBS's Early Edition (Cathy), Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, Paramount's The World Stands Up (taped in London), Heavy Petting (Sarco Films), and a slew of national commercials including Yellowbook, Avis, AOL, Southwest Airlines, Mercedes and Wendy's.
