A friend of mine is in desperate need of a good chiropractor in the city. She has recently had a bad experience with one and was hoping to get a recommendation for a good one.

Can anyone help a sista out?

Would you forgive me if I shat on your thread and suggested that your friend avoid chiropractors at all costs? It's quackery, well documented quackery.

(It's just that a chiropractor practically killed my uncle -- he went in one day complaining of upper back pain, which was unusual for him. The quack performed an adjustment and sent him home to sleep on the couch. He died in his sleep of heart failure. Anyone with any medical knowledge at all could have recognized the sudden onset of upper back pain as a cardiac problem.)

So yeah. I shit on your thread, and I apologize for it.

now that that piece of advice has been given, let me attempt to be helpful.

there is a chiropractic method called the activator method where the doctor adjusts only the areas of that are causing the problems using a tool that some call a "thumper." most chiropractic methods knock other things out of alignment as they adjust you, that's why you need so many treatments and never feel quite right. a doctor using the activator method can usually help you bring about the end of the pain within a month of visits (2-3 a week) but sometimes it's much less (last time i went to my doctor back home it only took 2 visits to get everything readjusted).

now, i don't have a chiropractor in the city, but my doctor back home gave me this web address ( www.activator.com ) that explains the whole thing and lists all the doctors who use the activator method nation wide. here's the new york page: http://www.activator.com/qualified_search_results.asp

hope this helps.

I think Frank Gondorchin's post was helpful, and yours was too. You needn't disparage someone else's contribution to lift yours up. Tsk, tsk. When making decisions the more information you have the easier your ultimate decision will be.

and also shouldn't you put quotes around the word doctor?

he asked for chiropractors.

i have gone to both quack chiropractors and good ones, and there are both in this world. having gone to several since the age of 12 i can say that the good ones i've gone to have all used the method i mentioned above (2 different doctors) the others (3 other doctors all at the same clinic) did the whole back cracking thing and yes, i agree, that is very quacky. i would never suggest going to a chiropractor who does that. i feel that it screwed my back up more than helped it and i also feel that those doctors were greedy asking too much for the services the provided.

i reccomended the method above because it has helped me in the past and the doctors i have delt with have been very good to me. they don't schedule extra appointments and when i was uninsured they helped me out and charged me a lower fee.

i was not disparaging anyone, i was being helpful.

Scott, I'm very sorry about your Uncle, and I agree with your assesment of chiropractic as quackery. But I disagree with placing any blame or responsibility on the chiropractor in cases like yours. My girlfriend goes to a chiropractor and I sit in on the sessions sometimes. I would never expect this man to provide medical diagnoses. He just cracks her back and tries to relieve tension.

If a problem of this type exists, in it's in the public's misconception of chiropractors. I don't believe any chiropractors would claim to be able to diagnose heart trouble. Though I suppose you could attribute the misconceptions to being encouraged by certain practicioners and elements in the chiropractic community, I'd have a hard time blaming any chiropractors I've known for failing to make a medical diagnosis.

We get to continue to derail this thread? AWESOME.

Of course I'd quickly be dismissed from this chiropractor's jury (not that he had a trial), and hindsight is always perfect, but I think I'd have a hard time letting him off so easy even if he didn't kill my uncle. If you claim to be an expert on backs, then at some point in your career, you should have heard that heart trouble can manifest itself as upper back pain. And if a long-time patient who only complained of lower back pain arrived suddenly complaining of upper back pain, then you refer him to the hospital. He came to you because he thought it was just his back, but a person who calls himself a "doctor" and claims to cure things should have that much knowledge of the human body.

Please continue to accept my apologizes for hating this thread.

I think that is the key to the issue: Do chiropractors represent themselves as doctors or not? Even if they don't directly make or encourage this claim, do they have responsibility for their clients perceiving them this way?

It's certainly a larger issue than my opinion of the lame-ass dude who molests my girlfriend's back.

dr cliff inkles is the best chiro in the universe. and he'll work out a deal if u r short on cash.

his old number is 212 496-6800. he moved offices recently and i don't have the new number on hand. pm me if u cant find it.

*this is network chiro and not cracky mac crackerstein. i've been seeing him off and on since i was 8. he doesn't use the thumper thing either- it's more like passive stretching and it is really powerful (but gentle).

**i was recently almost killed by a regular MD's misdiagnosis- so i have a healthy lack of respect for the medical profession. but i've had some really good experiences too. if something doesn't feel right- speak up! and always bring a list of questions so they don't rush you along and take your cash.
