CAGEMATCH XXX

6 teams enter. 1 team leaves.

Ever wanted to be in the Cagematch instead of on the sidelines? Now is your chance! On Sunday May 4th there will be a special Cagematch tournament open to UCBT students only. The winner will get a crack at the real Cagematch in June.

Choose your team. Make your mark.

ELIGIBILITY:

1. Teams must have a minimum of 7 players and no more than 9.
2. All players on the team must have completed or be currently enrolled in a level 3 class at the UCB theatre.
3. At least 6 players on the team must be enrolled in a current class as of Friday, April 18.
4. Each player can be on one and only one team.
5. Current Harold team members are ineligible.

SUBMIT YOUR TEAM:

To enter, send a complete list of the performers on your team with email addresses to classes@ucbt.net by Wednesday, April 23rd. ASK PERMISSION FROM YOUR PROPOSED TEAMMATES BEFORE YOU ENTER YOUR TEAM. If you enter someone as part of your team without their permission, your team may be disqualified.

On Thursday, April 24th at the Cagematch, we will randomly choose 6 teams from those that have entered to compete on Sunday, May 4th (shows at 6:00pm, 7:30pm and 9:00pm) at Rose Nagelberg Theatre at the Baruch Performing Arts Center (Lexington and 25th).

The winner, based on audience votes, will perform at the regular UCB Cagematch in June (date to be announced).

So, six teams, three shows. How will the winner be determined, exactly? If two terrible teams face off in the same show, but one is much, much more terrible, the other one could get more votes from its audience than a much better team which faces stiffer competition will get from ITS audience. Is there some other, fairer way you're going to determine the winner?

We are working on the details, but I think it will be based on the total number votes that a particular team gets.

I've already had a couple of inquiries about stretching the rules to fit existing teams. Sorry, but the rules as they stand are already stretched from the original intention of this being for current level 3 and 3b students only. I realize that you might need to create a new team for this tournament, but that's kinda the idea.

I'm kind of interested in this competition, but frankly I'm not a part of a team that fits all the stated requirements. Reservations from the rules aside, I'd like to see the competition open up some...really have these make-shift groups fight for the right to battle in the cagematch. I think only having 6 teams, pulled from a hat, could keep a lot of potentially good teams out of the running.

That's just my 2 cents. Why not run it similar to Battle Royale? The Office had to win a series of matches to get a shot at cagematch...and when they finally got there I think they proved themselves as a good group, not just a group that could stack the audience (though they proved themselves as that too ;)

Just a suggestion.

Word,
-Matt

Welp, I have one night to run this competition. Basically three slots. To do it tournament style, I'd need more time slots, or I'd have to narrow it down to fewer teams.

Let me say again that the idea here was to get teams filled with current students in this show. That's where the rules are coming from. We'll see what happens. I'm not going to loosen up the rules unless I don't get any entries that fit the rules.

I'm going to sleep on this and think about if there are some improvements that can be made to the tourney structure...

Ok, here's the deal everyone.

We have 12 teams entered. We have made the decision to expand this into a full single-elimination tournament with 8 teams. The first round will be at Baruch as planned and then we will do the semifinals and finals at the UCB Theatre on Mondays at 11pm.

I wish we could invite all 12 teams. But we will select the 8 that will be in the tournament tonight, during or after cagematch.

More info later this evening.

Good decision, Mullaney... the originally-planned manner of determining the winner was, frankly, bad -- it would have amounted to essentially drawing a name out of a hat. A tournament will actually ensure that the winner is, if not the best group involved, at least among them.

Now I'm interested in seeing the shows!
