Breakfast Place & a Tuesday Afternoon: Recommendations

Hi fellow blue-staters. I just found out I'm taking day trip to New York next Tuesday, Nov. 9 for a morning job interview downtown (around Hudson & W Houston). Just thought I'd post and see if anyone had any recommendations for a good breakfast place downtown and/or any ideas on how to spend a few afternoon hours in the city, since I won't be able to catch any of the Harold Night shows.

I'm getting ready to come back to NYC after a much needed 2 year hiatus and I don't really know what's changed since 2002, but I'm curious. Maybe a visit to the MoMA? The weather Upstate is just now starting to enter the winter funk stage (as we reluctantly exeunt the autumnal neo-soul stage) and this is my one day jail break.

Your assistance appreciated.

For a good breakfast at a greesy spoon-type diner, try the Waverly Diner (6th Ave. & Waverly). And not too bad on the wallet.

The MOMA Is outrageously pricey - go uptown and hit the Met or the Natural History and see the dinosaurs or throw some coin at the newly refurbished Planetarium (better, pay what you want and see the exhibits at the Planetarium instead!)

Empire Diner on 20th and 10th is a little far up, I guess. Hmmm... I'm bad at addresses down there. Florent is on Gansevoort, in the meat packing area kind of north and west of Hudson and Houston.

Stroll along the walkway along the river, Christopher Street to the Chelsea Piers is all nice and park-y these days.

I work one avenue away (Varick and Houston) and my favorite place around here is The Grey Dog. Their food is SO good and it's a great place to chill. It's at 33 Carmine between Bleecker and Bedford St.
You can take a walk up Bleecker and see how much it's changed since you were last here. Marc Jacobs, Cynthia Rowley, etc.--weird. But still a pretty walk. Stop by Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker and 11th for an amazing cupcake. The meatpacking district has changed a lot since 2002 and it's much better during the day.
Central Park is gorgeous right now! And the Met is always a good way to kill time. The new Time Warner building at Columbus Circle is worth checking out--it's really beautiful. Play with fun gadgets at the Samsung store and then go up to the 4th floor and peek inside the fancy restaurants.
Good luck on your interview!

I work at Hudson and Houston, and agree with mindygirl - Grey Dog and walking around the Village...but if speed is what you need for b'fast, there's a diner (Kenny's) on Hudson, about 2 blocks south of Houston, and Lunch (aka Hudson Coffee Bar?), where you can sit down and grab a bite, right across from Kenny's.

Good luck!

You guys rock.

Thanks so much everybody. I will definitely have to revisit the Grey Dog (ate there many times for lunch/dinner but breakfast will be new) and looking forward to a walk by the piers to fortify myself for a day of interviewin' and apartment viewin'. Please continue to keep the weather 10 degrees warmer there then (than?) in Upstate. Much love.
