Anyone know anything about good boxing classes in NYC?

Looking for a good upper body workout. Not really up for the sparring and what have you, but I'd be down with that under the right circumstances.

Let me know if anybody's got the info.

Hi,
I took classes at Church Street Boxing, I think it was 4 classes for $100, but it was at least a couple of years ago. They teach you the right way to throw the 4 basic punches, how to use the speed bag and the heavy bag, and how to hit really hard (which as a woman was really satisfying). There was a little bit of sparing in the last class, but i couldn't bring myself to hit the guy. It's a serious gym, and you learn alot.

My number one suggestion is Mendez Boxing Gym in Chelsea. It's 185 a month or 25 a session with trainer. You'll get Hector or George who are both incredible. It's definitely not a class but you don't have someone all over you every second either. I've been to MANY gyms in the city but Mendez always feels like home. You will NOT find nicer people or sharper instruction for the money. Plus, it smells the best.

It will go like this:
3 3 minute rounds with a jump rope
3 3 minute rounds shadow boxing (when you first start, you will have guidance on all of this)
2 to 3 3 minute rounds on pads depending on your endurance. This is the sweet spot and where Hector and George's expertise really comes into play
3 3 minute rounds on the heavy bag
3 3 minute rounds on the speed bag
and then calisthenics

It can take a hour and a half, but will whip you into some serious shape very very quickly.

Make sure you get the right wraps, and once you get hooked, spend some money on your gloves. The 25 dollar Everlast ones from Modell will mess up your wrists in the long run.

Dan, I have a pair of never-used Everlast wraps and you are welcome to them. (I opened the package, but never unwrapped them.)

I would like to see the return of UCB boxing competitions, by the way.

The only issue with Mendez is that you'll want to bring a full water bottle, because they don't have a water fountain (or you can buy a bottle of water for a dollar from them). Also, the locker rooms are not that great, very cramped and with bad showers, and you have to rent a towel for a dollar if you don't bring your own. Also, Hector speaks very little English - virtually none - which can cause some comprehension issues when he's correcting your form or you're on pads with him.

That sounds worse than it is - I go there, and have trained with Hector, and I like the place. But if you're looking for a bigger place, with a huge locker room and showers and towels, and you're looking to pay a lot more money (like $250 a month), and you don't mind going down to Rector Place, Trinity Boxing is an alternative.
