My friend DANNY OZARK co-hosts an open mic at BAR NOIR the second monday of every month. Its comedy/poetry/sexy monologues.
He also hosts an open mic on wednesdays at ABELINE's on South St between 4th and 5th. I know there are comedians, maybe music and poetry, but I'm not sure.

I've been to Helium's open mic as well, its usually pretty good, strictly stand-ups, but I did see the sketch group Animosity Pierre perform there once. You need to get there early to sign up, like 6 or 6:30, show starts around 8pm, I think each gets between 3-5 minutes. Danny usually performs there, he's a nice guy, talk to him there, or contact him on MYSPACE under DANNY OZARK.

The Helium Open mic is a very high quality open mic, I was really impressed when I went there with some friends. I had a soda and an appetizer, I think maybe mozz sticks, or spring rolls. I can't remember what I ate but I know that I definetely had a club soda.

I don’t remember you eating when you were there with me, McFairy. There was a club soda involved though. I definitely remember a club soda.

Okay, I'm going to be reading some stuff at the open mic night on Monday at Bar Noir. I reserve the right to leave early. But if any of ya'll be around, I will be there looking REALLY handsome.

BAR NOIR is an interesting space.

First, its dark and small. I don't know how conducive it would be to improv unless it was just a "talking head" scene (and I know how you all hate that). Same for sketch, although The Minor Prophets perform there but it's usually just them presenting a video.

BAD HAIR did a sketch during one of those Fringe Previews but it didn't quite work for us.

Plus it's basically two groups of people: those down front watching and those in the back getting drunk and being loud. The later it gets, the louder it gets.

It's really more suited to open-mic stuff: singers, stand-up, poetry, etc. One guy/gal in a space performing. I did the open mic a few weeks ago and Danny Ozark is indeed a very good guy. As an emcee, he is both funny and enthusiastic.

Coor Lights are $1, which is pretty cool if you like to support a crazy conservative beer maker or you just like to get drunk on the cheap.

So I performed at Bar Noir last night. It felt kind of disaster-ish.

Yeah, the place is TINY. Danny Ozark is a good guy -- real comforting, helpful, etc.

The other performers were stand-ups of varying levels. Some were polished, others not so much. The clientele was problematic. A few people up front were into the show but a few people in the back were really disruptive, which is what I guess cocaine is for.

The coke crew in the back got really nasty with heckling during one kid's set. He went right back at them and then into his set. Then he started telling jokes about missing kids on milk boxes and the coked out dude in the back flipping out about his cousin who was kidnapped and demanded the mics get turned off, etc. His crew were then told to leave.

I went pretty late. By that point no one seemed to really care what I had to say.
