Ack! I had two friends get stuck with bed bugs a while ago, one moved to San Francisco to escape them, the other I think has given up and moved on as well.

I made this lame little poster for them though : Link! Man, I had long hair at one point.

That's pretty rough. Do they exterminate in subways, or would that be ridiculous?

I got a new used couch last week, and just to make sure it was clean, I slept in it for two or three nights straight, figuring that if it was infested I'd find out quicker that way. So far the coast is clear.

they look like flat ladybugs when filled w/your blood (gross, right?).
BUY STERI-FAB NOW and spray the crap out of your stuff when you get home.

bedbugs are the devil's best friends.

thanks for the heads up jenmcjen!

I had them for a while and it sucked. Eventually it took shit loads of bug bombs and wrapping my mattress in this thick non-permeable plastic stuff. They all died after about a year.

Yeah, you read that right. Nothing says let's get intimate to a lady than your bed wrapped in plastic... unless they are into that sort of thing... which normally means you should get out of that relationship fast.

Of course all this information is from the Post, which in terms of vermin is about on the same level as the bugs.

This STERI-FAB you speak of, what is it? Can you get it at a drug store? I don't have bed bugs, but I like to be prepared.

i've never heard of this before. what theaters? now i'm scaywed.
They infested the movie theater at Lincoln Center. I got eaten up pretty badly when I went to see No Country for Old Men.

We've been having some success battling them back in our apartment. We weren't badly infested to begin with. But it's been a challenge, since they are coming from somewhere. That's the real challenge. Even if you get them out of your apartment, you can't secure the rest of the building. They just find their way back in. I got rid of them the first time, and was without them for three months. A few weeks ago, the started sneaking in again, so I've started the process over, and all seems to be going well. I'm just treating it like a chronic illness my building has. Luckily, they never infested our mattress (we now keep it encased in vinyl).

It can take weeks, and by the time they show up it may be too late. I would vacuum the cracks and crevaces of it regularly as well, just to be safe. But if you bought it from a reputable company, you should be okay.

Yes. Vacuum everything. They not only live in beds, but in the cracks of wooden furniture. So I wouldn't be surprised if they're hanging out in the subway. The bummer about these bugs is that it doesn't matter if you have a clean or dirty home. If you keep your eyes out once a week, you should be fine. I had them over a year ago and it was the hellish thing ever. My clothes are still in plastic bags in my drawers. Ziplock has giant awesome bags.

I got the Steri-fab at my local hardware store. If anything, buy it online NOW. I'm sure like any other bug, they love the summer. So prepare people. These fuckers suck.

worst news ever.

if you haven't dealt with bedbugs, consider yourself blessed from God. seriously, its like one of the modern day plagues in our city. the best tool overall is prevention. plastic cover your mattresses now so that they are protected -- plastic mattress covers are like 5 dollars, so buy 3 of them and you're golden.

bedbugs slide off of metal furniture...so get a lot of metal. they are able to feed once and last a couple of months alive and reproducing -- so don't give them the opportunity to have the chance. Steri-fab everything -- your couches, curtains...etc.

it might not be super sexy, but at least you'll be bite free -- and bedbug bites are huge welts on your body but only if you are allergic to them. some people get bit with no trace. that fact was given to us by my exterminator.

yuck.

if you do get them, you'll have to wash all your clothes in super hot water. then put them in these:

then make your closet look like this:

and/or hook yourself up at the container store with these:
