Dear Dan, Regina, and all troupe members,
This missive is to unfortunately inform you that there will not be a Big Stinkin Comedy Festival 5 as originally planned for October 2001 and to cordially and personally thank you for your efforts and energy putting together and sending in your materials for showcase consideration. Your enthusiasm to participate is noted and really appreciated. The festival is not going away but has been deferred once again till October 2002. (Exact dates TBA).
The reasons we have decided to defer forward till October 2002 are as follows:
The bigger partner to innovate the festival business has not materialized in the previously established timeframes and it would be a largely fruitless exercise in putting on a fest when the timeframes are prohibitive for a successful overall production.
What that means for you is that there would be far more unnecessary logistical and artistic difficulties for you to deal with prior to and at festival time that need be. A good and useful festival is one that not only puts patrons in seats for shows, (yours included) but when leave the event you are educationally, artistically and career refreshed as well.
If the win-win scenario doesn’t materialize then producing an event that offers piecemeal to both the artist and the event audience, doesn’t reflect well on anyone, wastes effort, time and money for all concerned and nobody moves forward significantly in their chosen endeavors. We have not been idle in the restructuring of the business and working toward a quality well-organized event but being at the heart of this business we do understand what it takes, the timelines and whether the event will or will not work for all concerned.
In short, you’d have an unfair and frankly unfulfilling time and that is not what anyone, especially the festival wants.
This was not an easy decision to make and do understand your disappointment, (I am too) but it was made in yours as well as the festivals best interest.
Undoubtedly there will be some spirited public debate as to the festival’s credibility, existence and usefulness with the new date deferment. For those of you that feel that further contact with the festival would be not useful to themselves or their respective theater companies goals we sincerely wish you every success in your theatrical paths, choices and future shows. For those of you who do we sincerely look forward to visiting with you in the future. If you are not interested in being contacted please contact
bsoffice@bigstinkin.com tell us whom you represent and you will be taken off the future contact list.
So I ask you to be patient and when the public announcement of specific dates for the 2002 festival and the Website change occurs, that’s when you’ll know that the business has finally refined itself. In the mean time be assured this festival is not done and over until I announce it.
There are a number of new festivals taking small and larger steps in the improv comedy community and I recommend you check
www.yesand.com for listings and contact info for the coming year. There will be some editorial at
www.yesand.com in the coming days also plus interview.
I would like to keep any sent materials on file for review for 2002 and for those who have sent materials understand that will be a submission for 2002 unless your showcase changes and you feel necessary updates when the time comes are in order. The festival will contact you with further details to discern future interest in festival participation. The interest in the Oct 2001 festival was also surprisingly significant with 127 troupes sending in e-registrations and another 25 asking for festival particulars.
I would like to formally apologize for your disappointment and any misconceptions or misinformation you have received or perceived. I did miss a deadline to put up registration fees on the Website in July and would like to formally apologize for any confusion or inconvenience that may have also caused you.
So, in conclusion I am quite clear about where I am going with the direction of the festival and do already have matched prospects to talk with and resource the business but, that takes more time, and more than is available in the coming months. And that is where the buck stops, unfortunately for everyone.
Finally if this missive has not answered any other questions please forward any inquiries to
bsoffice@bigstinkin.com and I will do my best to answer them. Please be patient on replies.
Best regards
Sincerely yours
Ed Carter
