Astoria...?

My roommate and I are looking at apartments there tonight. Anyone live there who can shed a little light on what it's like? Is the commute okay?

I like it!

I'd look for a place along the N/W line as opposed to the V/G/R lines which can get crazy with changes. The N/W is pretty regular. It's also elevated, which is pretty.

I work in midtown, so the commute is great: 20 minutes for the train ride from Astoria Blvd.
Also, there's a great Bohemian Beer Garden near the Astoria Blvd stop.

It's not quite gentrified yet, though, so you may have trouble finding the kind of hipster locales you can find in Brooklyn and Manhattan. But that means you can keep it real, yo. There's only two Starbucks that I know of, and one tiny used bookstore. But you've got a Home Depot, a Best Buy, and a movie theater that has cheap matinees on weekdays.

I lived there for a year, and never got used to the commute. Leaving Manhattan any time after 11PM makes for a really long wait at the subway station. The beer garden is really cool though.

I really liked the 30ave/Steinway neighborhood. The bonus there is you can take an N/W or an R to get home. (and the queens nysports club is right there.)

If you are looking for brokers, go to Metropolis realty. Ask for Nick, he found me something last minute and I am very happy with it.
I just moved close to Ditmars. I haven't been there long enough to explore the neighborhood, but so far it's pretty nice.
It takes me 50 minutes to get from home to the financial district and about half an hour to get to midtown.

I live in Long Island City right now (which is right next to Astoria. They are pretty much the same area) and I have to move, but I'm looking to stay in the area, because it is really close to the city.

I'm either looking to just room with someone or I have a friend who has a really nice place near the N/W and G,R,V line. (I mean really close like you could throw a rock at it.) The place is 3 bedrooms and has two bathrooms, so I can't afford it on my own. It's very clean and I would love to live there, but I need two other people to live with me. It's 1800 a month and split three ways would be 600. I might even be able to talk him down a little because he's my friend. I have a better description of the place and myself in a thread in the NYC section. Or just search by looking for all posts by bensonbelvedere.

Let me know if you and your room mate would be interested and I could talk to him about letting you see the place.

As for the area... it was the first place I live when I moved to NYC two years ago. It's nice and quite and close to the city and in general cheaper to live. The movie theater is cool I live right by it, the beer garden everyone agrees is equally, if not more cool.

I just moved to Woodside (the R line.) I like it here. There's tons of stuff around me that I need. Like a pharmacy, supermarkets, a health store, Starbucks, Express, Payless, Lite Bites, etc. I live upstairs from UCB'ers and there are a bunch in the neighborhood, so I can usually find somebody to split a cab with from McManus. I don't spend a lot of night life time in Queens, and even if I lived in hipster area I don't imagine I would. I'm usually in Manhattan during the day anyway, and go out in the area I wind up in. Don't we all?

Best of luck!

I lived in Astoria moved to Manhattan and then moved back. The fact that I moved back is a vote for Astoria!

You want to be east of 31st Street (that's the street the N/W runs above). West of it is mostly crappy.
I don't neccessarrily find this to be true.
Its really a building by building basis. And a street by street basis.

I have lived in Astoria for a little over a year, off the ditmars blvd. stop on the N/W.
The commute is not too bad and the beer garden is great.

I also used Nick from Metropolis and if you pay him half in cash he will discount your fee. He found me a place in a day and it is a great apartment. He also got the landlord to knock of $100 a month by lying about how well he knew us and how great we were.

If you go to the Beer Garden, please do not scream and sing until 4 in the morning on a weekday. Remember that the people who live across the street are trying to sleep.

Astoria is awesome. Quiet, peaceful, with friendly folks. The train ride isn't that bad during the day, although it clogs up during rush hour. It is safe for late night walks home, because there is always a larger avenue to walk along until you reach your block. The closer to 31st street or Steinway, the better.
