Art Permit

#1
Has anyone sold their art work on the streets of NYC? If so, do you need a permit? Any information on this topic would be quite helpful or if you know where I can find this info -- that would be great!

I'd take these folks more seriously if (a) their website worked properly, and (b) they learned how to spell "amendment" as in "First Amendment." I can't really tell who these people are standing for (food carts? artists?), or how current their sources are.

Pardon me for feeling snarky today.

Eh Snark away, I've been pretty much a receptacle for snark these days, so I'm use to it. I didn't really look all that hard at the site so it is my fault. Figured there would at least be some links to actual law type stuff.

Also started posting before your post so I totally missed that.

Cheers

Basically it depends on your art. I assume you want to physically sell something, like paintings, or cd's stories etc....when you physically give somebody some thing that is defined as "tangible" you have to pay taxes on it...unless (and here is a loophole) you simply ask for donations...with this you can basically sell anything you want, but it is a very gray area, if rather than naming a price, you ask for a "donation" you do not need a permit, but often with actual physical goods, it is much better to have one cause cops won't harass you as much. i do not need one for what I do, because i do not physically give anyone anyhting, but there are many times where it would benefit me to have a tax stamp, even though it is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY and not even POSSIBLE for me to get one, it would help with somme of the cops...see the big thing is most cops don't know these type lawas, cause they are well...frankly idiots, and i can say that cause i have dealt with enough of them to say so. I have been issued tickets ranging from disorderly conduct to unlicensed vendor, but of the 12 tickets and one arrest, NOTHING has ever stuck, because i am within my constitutional rights...as are you to accept money for your art, there is a real great website.

the MTA has their own rules about everything, that involves if you are to work inside the subway turnstiles. it is very clear in their statement on it.

good luck

best thing for ya to do, go to times square after 11 pm and ask one of the guys doing it when they are on their breaks (the spray painters i meant) or ask the vendors too, most of em are willing to share info, those that dont suck, and dont matter, cause there will be plenty of people who will help ya out. good luck. i am pretty sure a tax stamp would be your only required thing, then you have to follow the rules as to when you can and can't be out there, usually after 11 PM sun-thur and after 1 am fri sat, but that is totally a BS time thing, cops can come yell at you even after the 11 PM time, and they also will sometimes leave you alone before 11..there is really no rhyme or reason. good luck.
