Are oysters good?

yes they are...very good

and I have friends that are coming into town this weekend from D.C. because they are maniacal oyster freaks. I told them that I had the best oysters a week ago at:

Blue Ribbon
97 Sullivan Street

So, before we see Mother: the Soundtrack on Saturday, we are eating $2 oysters.

Or...is there another place to get good oysters in the city?

What's your favorite place for oysters and beer?

Blue Water Grill (Union Square) and Oyster Bar (Grand Central) have the best oysters I've had in NY. Aqua Grill in Soho is also good.

Oyster Bar is the most interesting oyster experience.

Many workers at The Oyster Bar are in the 4th month of a strike. So depending on how you feel about unions, you may want to re-consider that option.

I second Blue Water Grill.

Brownstone Brat

Hates the LAX-JFK redeye

Balthazar on Spring St. has a great selection of oysters.
I second Pastis...and pretty much all the other selections above.

Also, believe it or not, they have yummy oysters at Angelo & Maxie's and also at Sidecar.

Or you could always go to Lundy's in Sheepshead Bay...if it's still around.

Pier 118 and Beer Garden on Smith Street in beautiful Brooklyn. You can get them half shelled or on a lovely po-boy. The large variety of beers I can't pronounce come in large manly frosted steins.

Can't get much better

Mmmm...bivalves

I have eaten a lot of oysters in this city, and here's my pick(s).

Pastis is GREAT for them -- fresh, yummy, and a really good accessory for ogling supermodels and the Europeans who want to fuck them. You'll get the same oysters at Balthazar (same restaurant group), but I've had better luck getting into Pastis -- on a Saturday night, go EARLY.

A close second is Aquagrill -- they've got a really great variety, and you can watch the guys shuck 'em. I love that. Always a good, fresh selection. Make a reservation on a Saturday night. Also, talk to the shucker about varieties -- he may let you try some for free... a big plus (and this won't happen at Pastis).

Avoid Grand Central -- because of the workers, and also because of the hepatitis. I kid, but uh...maybe I don't.

Mare (8th Ave & 18th St) has a great selection and is reasonably priced.

Blue Water Grill is a perennial favorite of mine.

Have heard tell that Markt and Noche have great raw and fried oysters, respectively.

these all sound good, but am I gonna have to dress up?

I don't mind spending a bunch of money that I don't have on expensive, tasty oysters........my mouth is watering......sorry...

but I want to be able to drink beer and be the obnoxious urfman that I become after drinking five Stella Artois' and eating a dozen on the half shell.

Balthazar...too posh

Blue Water Grill...too fancy

The Garden in Brooklyn sounds promising but what about the ice and snow? I want to eat oysters served on ice, not dress up like and oyster, have someone cover me in chili sauce and...what am I talking about? Too much sugar in my coffee.

Does anyone know anything about this place:

Markt
401 W. 14th St. (West Village)
At Ninth Ave.
212-727-3314

Please don't make me dress up (either in nice clothes, or as an oyster in nice clothes).

thank you very much.

At the very heart of New York's Meatpacking District, the Belgian restaurant Markt ironically relies on seafood to fill its atmospheric woody interior and 60 sidewalk seats. Patrons enjoying grilled ahi with tapenade watch as white-jacketed meatpacking workers wheel sides of beef into the refrigerators of nearby wholesalers. Markt's menu extends to waffles, lamb chops, chicken and Muscovy duck as well as traditional mussel preparations. Belgian chocolate lends a new level of lush to sinful specialties like mousse and tarts. A long and welcoming bar orchestrates many genevers (gins) from Belgium, and for each of the many Belgian beers, there is its own special glass to showcase it properly. Markt is uproarious when filled, and its hard wooden bench seats seem best suited to the young.

If you're gonna go to Markt...

just do yourself a favor and go to Pastis for the oysters. Markt is only like 1% less posh than Pastis, but Pastis has better oysters.

I know that with oysters, a bargain can be a recipe for disaster.

Can safe, yummy oysters be found at a good price on the island of Manhatty?

Need a place for two raw bar and champagne fiends - so even if the raw bar pricing is comparable but the booze mark-up isn't as high, it's a deal in the end.

We usually go to Blue Water Grill. Anyone been to Five Points? What's the dilly?

Thank you in advance, IRC Raw Bar Lovers.

Atlantic up on the Upper E.

Pier 116 on Smith Street in Brooklyn

Nick's Lobster Mart next to Kings' Plaza is to freaking die for. But is not fancy. At all. Not even slightly. but the food is the best.

Please tell me more of this Pier 116 and this Beer Garden that you speak of. Compare and contrast.

Originally thought I needed a place in Manhatty, but my friend is coming from Strong Island and can switch at Atlantic St. station...

The Oyster Bar in Grand Central is definitely tops in the city for oysters, along with seafood stews and soups. It's just past the food court on the lower-level, next to the whispering wall.

Also, there's a fantastic place on Bleecker right next to John's Pizza. I think it's simply called Fish Restaurant.

Five points has an awesome oyster happy hour, Rachel. Each one is a dollar, and martinis are half price, too. You have to sit in the bar area only, but they've got tables up there. Also, the happy hour starts at 5pm, and goes until 7pm. Their oysters are fresh and good. In fact, I'd recommend Five Points for any meal -- awesome restaurant, but not cheap.

Five Points is great - love their blood orange martini. Shaffer City (on W. 21st Street just off Fifth Ave.) has a huge selection of oysters and on Mondays, Malpeques are just a dollar. Their cocktails aren't as pretty as Five Points though.
