Apt Hunting

i am making the transplant move in a few weeks and am already looking online for apartments to get an idea of what is out there. on a couple of postings on craigslist, people are mentioning "proof of employment" as a rental requirement. while that makes sense that a landlord would want a tenant who is employed, i'm wondering if my girlfriend and i having great credit and nice references from our old landlord will be enough to get us in an apartment when we wont have jobs when we first get there.

anyone know if it is a problem to rent if you don't have a job? any apt hunting tips? i joined westside rentals and am looking through craigslist. i just want a pool.

You might get a pool, but it might be crappy.
Westside rentals is a good idea. Will you be staying with someone here while you look? Or do you have to find a place before you get here?
If you have the luxury of time, I'd suggest driving around the area you want to live in and calling the #'s on the for rent signs, from your car.

As far as the job thing, it CAN be a problem. I mean think about it, these landlords deal with a ton of flakey actor types who've probably burned them over and over. But if you have great credit and a good amount of money in your bank account, that will help. You know, so they know they'll get at least the first 6 months out of you.

I was temping by the time I got my apartment, so I had that to tell them as well.
Might be an idea, too, if you have that luxury of time thing. Register with a temp agency quickly.

There are a lot. Apple One seems to be really prevelant and they have offices in all different areas. Someone told me long ago that their Glendale office is the one that handles the industry jobs. Don't know if that's true.
I was working with Friedman, who I don't really recommend. With all the experience I had they could only get me/give me receptionist work for $8 hr. I quit as soon as I could, but it helped me to at least not go through the money I brought with me as fast.
There is another website that has strange jobs on it and that's where I got one of my best part-time jobs that I held onto even after I went full time at my present place....I'll find out the name.
But Craigslist is a good place for that stuff too.
