An indie team calendar

I'm not going to distort the below discussion so I shall leave my original post, but here are the new guidelines:
If you have an indie team and want access to edit, just email indienycimprov@gmail.com. Clearly not everyone on your team needs access. But if you know of shows that you AREN'T involved but don't see on the calendar, feel free to add them.

Keep the event name to just the team names. This includes variety shows. List the teams, not the show. If a show doesn't have teams booked yet, then it is fine to have the show name. The reason behind this is I don't think people should have to dig to find out what teams are at an event. Use whatever you want in the description (but off course include the price... and clear direction are always good).

Don't list house teams. There is no need for this calendar to have who is playing Harold Night. But if you are a house team playing AWAY from your home venue, sure... especially when you host indie teams (see fwand & Tantrum USM shows). If you are an indie team playing in one of the "schools," go ahead list it.

Don't list sketch or stand-up. Nothing wrong with either. Just setting limits.

If you have no desire to edit it yourself feel 100% free to email the above address with the show info. Seriously. It takes seconds for me to add something.

Original Post:
Last night, I'll milling about after the shows at Parkside Lounge, someone mentioned that it would be nice to have a centralized calendar of indie improv events. You know when you're trying to remember where such and such team has a gig and the Plug forum is doing it for you?

Well, I'm trying to make one. It's just a google calender. Nothing fancy. If you have a google account, you should be able to go to add friend's calender and put in "indienycimprov@gmail.com." That should give you access. It should be public... but I'm no google calender whizz so who knows.

It isn't anything fancy. I'll just try my best to keep it up via the plug thread and myspace pages and all that jazz. If you have something you want on the calender, just message me here or email the above address.

excellent idea. chris is teh shizz.

i have some bad data shows in my signature, i keep it relatively up to date. plug forum is going to be useful as well.

so should groups email that address with a list of their upcoming shows? or just add shows to the calendar as necessary? probably just add as necessary, we don't want this to be a ton of work for you.

show listings should include: show time, line up, price, address... what else?

Well, I don't mind just doing it. It only took a 20 minutes to do what is on it right now. (I admit, it is pretty anemic... it appears that there aren't a whole lot of shows coming up.) I also want to try to keep it as clean and simple as possible.

I am also not putting any of the "3 Schools" on it. They each have snazzy, well-maintained websites. I do want to list indie teams when they play at one of the 3 (say Cagematches) and house teams when they play away from the 3 (say Rogue Elephant's USM shows).

The calender should be viewable to ANYONE. If in the future I find it too annoying to spend 5 minutes a day plugging in events, I give teams editing power.

cool, i like it! bad data is going to look into hosting an indie improv night at the parkside coming up in the somewhat near future, and i think the people who book it will be all about that, considering how full it was last night.

You should give calendar editing access to other teams now rather than waiting until it becomes too much of a chore for you, because by that point it means you are already falling behind and people will already stop using the calendar and it will be too late. This is a great idea but for it to be successful the teams need to be able to update their own stuff.

If you don't like the idea that Google Calendar would let people mess around with other people's events, maybe a better idea would be to create a group on upcoming.yahoo.com --- then the events will show up in one place but everybody can keep their event info to themselves.

benzado, that's very very true. I am less concerned about people messing with a other groups than ending up with 6 listings of the same event.

Okay. New plan: any on who has a team, email indienycimprov@gmail.com. I just ask that anyone you does post try to keep the listings as simple as possible. It is not a a place to plug shows. It should be a reference resource.

I thought it was precisely the place to plug your show.

Google calendars does have a group access feature. You just share the calendar with people who have gmail, and set the permissions under "Share this Calendar." Don't get stuck doing all the work yourself.

Michelle, I think SixSider meant he will grant access to people who send him an email.

SixSider, what do you mean by "keep the listings simple" --- there's a field for an event title and also a description --- I think it should be fine to put whatever people want in the description as long as the titles are simple. Is that what you mean?

No, slightly different from plugging events. I just want a quick reference place. Nothing would make me sadder than seeing people posting their shows in all caps.

I also want to gear it towards teams and not venues or standing showcases. For example, as soon as I know who exact is playing at Oct 15th's West Brunswick Bonanza, I'd like it to show them it the title. (And thanks, Mr. Camp. I've put the shows I did know up and correct the Mo's show.)

Yeah, I know you can share access. I also know how quickly it can be a cluster fuck. But, yeah, now I'm giving edit access to whoever wants if they email/message me.

Teams in the event name. For example "Pop Pickles, Black Hat, Snowpants" and not "POP PICKLE'S SUPER SHOW!!! w/ Black Hat and the infamous Snowpants! This is the last show before Bob Finkel moves to San Fran!!!"

Whatever people want in the description, I suppose. As long as folks can get the important info (which usually comes down to cost/drink minimum) without reading through a lot of "THIS WILL BE THE GREATEST SHOW EVER!!!" stuff.

Again, people seemed to want a quick reference guide.

I have never recovered from being kicked out of Finkel's first practice/performance group, Cheese Danish. Screw him and screw San Francisco.

There should just be a place on this board where we can add our indie shows. Maybe some sort of wiki calendar? It shouldn't be THAT hard to set up, right?

Mullaney, get on it! (whip)

Well done, Chris. It's nice to know that post-show ramblings can have concrete results.

I believe this dancing banana aptly sums up how I am feeling:

that sounds pretty neat. at the very least a sticky with the link to the calendar so people can check it?

or i guess i can just use my non-unnoticed prodigious posting power to top it all the time.

iCal is a Mac application, but the .ics file is a generic standard (confusingly named iCalendar) which a bunch of other programs can read. For more info, ask Google about Mozilla Sunbird or Lightning.

To add to the calendar, email indienycimprov@gmail.com and ask politely for write access.
