Here are a few thoughts on preparing media for your reel:
• When you’re in a video/film production, ask for a copy of the final product in DV or DVCAM tape format, since that’s the format we use to edit your reel. This saves you money and prevents loss of quality on conversion. Independent and amateur productions especially will be able to accommodate this, as long as you provide the tape. Beta SP and Digi Beta are excellent for archiving, too.
• If you’re taping something from TV, use a DV camera as a VCR and record to DV tape. If you don’t have a DV Camera, try borrowing from a friend- most modern camcorders are DV. If you can’t record to DV, use S-VHS (high end VCRs will record to S-VHS). If you have no choice but to use VHS, be sure to record in Standard Play (SP) mode. If you record to a DVD, set the bitrate as high as possible (8000-9800 kbps).
• Archive your film/video projects on suitable archival media, like DV or Beta SP. VHS degrades quickly by comparison, both sitting on the shelf and through repeated viewing.
