3 on 3 Tournament forms

#1
We had Kevin Mullaney down to Louisville for a workshop last fall and based on his inspiration we're putting together a 3 on 3 improv tournament. Logistically I think we have it under control, my question is in regards to formats. I've never actually seen what folks do with their short time slots. We get 9 minutes for the first round, 12 for the second and 15 for the finals (so 8 teams total).

What kind of styles/formats have you seen/have you done/would you like to do with 2 others in short slots? Any style is allowed, it just has to stay within the timelimit and be improvised.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I like this question!

As the current host of NYC's 3 on 3, I can say that most people in the first round (7 minutes for us) do one of the following:

1. Monoscene. 3 people, 7 minutes. That works out pretty great.
2. Just a few scenes. Maybe it was supposed to be a monoscene, but it just didn't work. Quick edits and a bunch of scenes seems to be the default choice.

I've also seen musical improv (the third person in the group is the piano player), 2 people improvising with a puppet (run by the third person), a 7 minute Movie... and if I remember correctly, a 7 minute Documentary.
